The Chant of the Wing of Gabriel

Author: Abutorab Khosrawi

Number of Pages: 144

The Chant of the Wing of Gabriel is a famous philosophical work of Shahab al-Din Suhrawardi and the present study derive its title from this philosophical treasury. Utilizing Suhrawardi’s philosophical concepts in his episodes, Mr. Khosrawi embarks on a free reading of Suhrawardi’s book. Therefore, one can not find any direct correlation between these works and there is only thematic correspondence between the philosophical concepts of Suhrawardi’s and Khosrawi’s works. Khosrawi’s work intends to utilize a novel perspective on Suhrawardi’s allegorical and mystical fables. In the prologue of the book, Khosrawi mentions: “In some cases, Sheikh Suhrawardi utilize birds allegorically as his corresponding medium and in other cases, he talks directly about religious personages and human characteristics and behavioral codes. What I am looking for in Suhrawardi’s work is those allegorical or realistic elements that can facilitate modern story telling techniques in the Persian Literature. Therefore, utilization of symbolic story telling emblems such as the wise owl, the resourceful elf, the singing hoopoe and the cunning peacock will facilitate modern story telling techniques in the Persian Literature, since like the fundaments of the Persian Literature, they are the representative of hybridity.”
